Networking for Newbies: Building a Powerful Network at Fuse 2026

Most people show up to industry conferences with a stack of business cards and a “hope-this-works” attitude.

They wander the exhibit hall, grab a handful of cheap pens, eat a lukewarm slider at the mixer, and fly home wondering why their business looks exactly the same as it did on Wednesday.

Hope is not a strategy.

Networking isn’t about collecting contacts; it’s about building the room you want to lead in. In the wholesale channel, your network is your net worth. It’s the difference between a loan that gets stuck in underwriting and a partner who picks up the phone at 8:00 PM to help you clear a condition.

If you’re heading to Fuse 2026 in Austin this September, you’re not just attending a conference. You’re entering the frontier of the independent mortgage movement.

Whether you’re a new independent mortgage broker or an experienced pro looking to refine your circle, here is how you build a partner network that actually moves the needle.

  1. Stop Renting Attention. Build Relationships.

In the retail world, you’re told what to do and who to work with. In the wholesale world, you’re the CEO. That means you have to vet your partners with the same intensity you use to vet a new hire.

Before you even land at Austin-Bergstrom International, you need a hit list. Who is the wholesale mortgage lender you’ve been hearing about but haven’t sent a file to yet? Which tech vendor is promising to shave three days off your processing time?

The Strategy: Pick 3 to 5 key objectives. Don’t try to meet everyone. Try to meet the right ones.

  • For Non-Members: If you aren’t in the room, you can’t build the network. Secure your spot at Fuse 2026 here.
  • For AIME Members: Use the Brokers Are Best portal to research our Title and Platinum partners before you arrive. Know their products before you walk up to the booth.
  1. Leverage the Niche: Summits and Breakouts

Fuse isn’t just one big room; it’s a series of high-intensity environments designed to connect like minded professionals. If you try to play the “generalist” game, you’ll get lost in the noise.

The VA Summit

If you’re serious about serving those who served, Thursday morning is your Super Bowl. The VA Summit isn’t just about guidelines; it’s about connecting with brokers who have mastered the VA space. Sit next to someone who is doing more volume than you. Ask them one question: “What is the biggest bottleneck you solved this year?”

The WMN Summit

For the women leading this industry, the WMN Summit on Thursday afternoon is where the real coaching happens. It’s about more than just business: it’s about leadership, grit, and scaling a broker age while keeping your sanity.

Breakout Sessions

When the Friday afternoon breakouts start, don’t just sit in the back and check your email. These smaller rooms are “sorting mechanisms.” If you’re in a session about AI or scaling operations, every one else in that room has the same problem you do. That’s your tribe. Talk to them.

  1. The Exhibit Hall is Your Laboratory

The exhibit hall is where most people get lazy. They walk around looking for the best swag. You should be looking for the best synergy.

When you approach a wholesale mortgage lender, stop asking about rates. Everyone has rates. Instead, ask about their “Save-a-Deal” desk. Ask about their communication frequency. Ask what their underwriters do when a file gets weird.

The “Power Move” Questions:

  1. “What is your average clear-to-close time on a clean conventional file right now?” 2. “How do you handle escalation if a processor and an underwriter disagree?” 3. “Which of your products is winning the most in the current market?”

You are interviewing them. They want your business, but you only want partners who can execute.

  1. Master the Social “Second Act”

A bold, high-contrast image of a confident mortgage leader on a dimly

lit stage with a microphone, representing leadership and authority.

The networking that happens during the Kick-Off Party or the Hall of AIME is where the “ink dries” on relationships.

Most people use parties to check out. You should use them to check in. I’m not saying you can’t have a drink and enjoy Austin: it’s a great city: but the best conversations happen when the “sales masks” come off.

When you’re at the Hall of AIME party on Saturday night, find the people you met earlier in the week. Check in on them. Ask what their biggest takeaway was. This is where you move from “that guy/girl I met at the booth” to “my friend in the industry.”

  1. The 72-Hour Rule

The most powerful network in the world is useless if you don’t follow up.

By the time you land back home, your brain will be flooded with new ideas and a mountain of emails. If you don’t reach out to your new connections within 72 hours, the relationship will die on the vine.

The Follow-Up Framework:

  • Monday: Sort your leads and contacts.
  • Tuesday: Send a personalized LinkedIn request or text to your top 10 people. Mention something specific you discussed.
  • Wednesday: Schedule one “deeper dive” Zoom call for the following week with a lender or vendor you actually want to work with.

Build the Room Everyone Wants to Be In

AIME was built because we knew that independent mortgage brokers were stronger together than they were alone. We don’t just want you to survive; we want you to dominate the market. But you can’t dominate from an island.

Fuse 2026 is your chance to stop being a spectator and start being a player. The partners you meet in Austin will be the ones who help you scale your business in 2027 and beyond.

The frontier is waiting. Are you going to lead, or are you going to watch?
